Ukraine Claims U.S. Financial Aid Favors American Interests, Not Ukraine’s

(DailyChive.com) – A spokesperson for Ukraine made a surprising claim, stating that a total of $113 billion so far allocated to support their war against Russia isn’t directly reaching the country but is instead “benefiting American interests.” This statement came in response to inquiries about the use of American tax dollars in Uman. In this Ukrainian city, a condo is being built on a Jewish mass grave, violating both international law and bilateral agreements.

Back in January, reports emerged that Uman was pushing forward with the construction project despite pleas from members of Congress to protect the cemetery. Seeking clarification on whether U.S. funds were involved, Breitbart News contacted the Ukrainian Embassy. The spokesperson responded by saying that funds approved by U.S. legislators for Ukraine’s military supplies do not go directly to the country. Instead, the claim was that a “significant portion” of the billions sent is used in the United States to build new weapons or replenish existing stock sent to Kyiv.

This explanation raised concerns about the allocation of funds, with the spokesperson further asserting that nearly 90% of aid granted by Congress ultimately benefits “American interests,” likely referring to weapons manufacturers. This claim coincided with a recent Associated Press report exposing a conspiracy involving a Ukrainian arms firm and defense ministry officials who allegedly embezzled almost $40 million meant for weapons purchases.

This revelation follows months of scrutiny surrounding financial mismanagement within Ukraine’s defense ministry, which even led to the defense minister’s dismissal—the New York Times reported instances of corruption amid the influx of U.S. cash to support the war effort, mentioning instances where prepayments for weapons went missing.

Previously, members of Congress made concerted efforts to address the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Uman, highlighting violations of cultural heritage protection agreements. However, despite their letters expressing concern and demanding action, construction on the condo project continues unabated.

The Ukrainian Embassy attempted to deflect responsibility when approached for comment, claiming it’s a “city council” issue. This explanation contrasts the existing bilateral agreements and the letters from U.S. Congress directly addressed to the president and foreign affairs minister.

Further complicating the situation, Ukraine’s score on the annual Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International paints a worrying picture. Their score of 33 out of 100 in 2022 places them near the bottom third of the 180 countries assessed, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.
