Democrats Block Mayorkas Impeachment Trial

(DailyChive.com) – Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas received significant relief as Senate Democrats killed his articles of impeachment and saved him from entering a full Senate trial after being impeached by the House.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer initiated separate votes to declare both articles of impeachment against Mayorkas unconstitutional. The first impeachment article was dismissed when 51 Democratic Senators voted to sustain Schumer’s point of order while 48 Republicans voted against it, and one GOP Senator, Lisa Murkowski, voted present.

Schumer claimed that the articles of impeachment did not meet the minimum threshold set by the US Constitution.

The second article of impeachment charged Mayorkas with breaching the public trust. However, Schumer raised a point of order, followed by a Senate vote across party lines that killed this impeachment article by 51-49.

GOP Senators slammed Democrats for their unanimous vote to save Mayorkas instead of allowing the Senate to try him. They presented different motions to initiate the full trial of Mayorkas, but the Democratic majority in the chamber dismissed all GOP motions by 51-49 votes.

Republicans believe that Democrats did not want Mayorkas to come in the spotlight associated with a Senate trial, as it can damage their reputation among Americans who are increasingly worried about rising illegal immigration.

GOP Senator John Kennedy suggested that there was mounting evidence of negligence from the Secretary that could have hurt Democrats in the Senate trial.

Mayorkas has often shown a soft corner for increasing immigration due to his own migrant family and his bid to promote equity among Americans and others. He has even defended his pro-immigration policies by saying that America is a “nation of immigrants” and that Biden’s agenda of importing more migrants is to fill the rising job openings that would eventually contribute to the growing economy of the country.

Since Biden assumed the presidency in January 2021, more than 7.2 million illegal immigrants have entered the US.
