GOP Suggests House Official Could Detain Garland

(DailyChive.com) – Republican lawmakers have presented a proposal under which the House Sergeant-at-arms could arrest Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland if he continues to refuse to provide the information requested by Congress.

Conservative Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, who floated the resolution of Inherent Contempt of Congress to make the AG accountable, told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo that House Sergeant-at-arms could detain Garland due to his refusal to provide audio tapes that could prove consequential in Biden’s classified documents probe.

Republicans are pursuing this effort in the wake of the Justice Department’s refusal to prosecute Garland for contempt of Congress. The DOJ maintained that Biden has executive privileges over the audio tapes so they could not be presented in front of Congress.

Luna indicated that her resolution will come to the floor of the House soon for a vote that is necessary to bring Garland to justice.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has already suggested dragging Garland to the court for his Contempt of Congress. However, Luna believes that taking the matter to the court will only delay the accountability process.

Luna has previously warned the DOJ to start its prosecution against Garland by June 25, the failure of which will urge her to conduct a vote on the resolution. If the resolution is passed, Garland could face the choice of either producing a recording or facing arrest by the House law enforcement team.

Garland has accused the GOP lawmakers of abusing their authority and turning their offices into partisan weapons.

The attorney general has consistently ignored House subpoenas regarding audio tapes of Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hurr.

Although the House still has access to the transcript of the interview, they claim that the audio recordings are still needed to move the impeachment hearing against President Biden forward.

Inherent Contempt of Congress differs from Contempt of Congress in that the former empowers Congress to send the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the person in question.
